Gallery Night Providence
Gallery Night, Providence is an on-Going Event Every third Thursday of
the Month, during the spring, summer, and fall, 5-9PM--Gallery Night,

can see Craig's current works, those of his wife Gail Armstrong, and
ten other resident painters at the Deacon Taylor House Gallery and
Studios, 9 Thomas Street, Providence, RI 02903.  The Providence Art
Club Galleries are immediately adjacent on the street. The Maxwell
Mays Gallery is upstairs in the main brick building, and the Dodge

Rhode Island Artists for Save The Bay
My wife Gail Armstrong and myself both have had two paintings accepted in
this fund-raising event for SAVE THE BAY, an obviously good cause to
clean up Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. The event will showcase
bay-related paintings, photography and sculpture by local artists. An
Opening reception will be held on Saturday, June7,2008 from 5-8PM at the
Save the Bay Center, Providence, RI. For more information call  SaveThe
Bay Center :401-272-3540, or visit their website,www.savebay.org. The
exhibition is finished now, but don't forget about this important organization,
and continue to support actions to save our local waters and the birds and
boats that live on them. If you missed an opportunity to get to the art auction
event--the opening was great with wonderfull food including an oyster bar,
keep their website bookmarked. It's an annual event. See you there next
year.

MEMBER'S EXHIBITION, on the theme of "Words" at the
Providence Art Club, 11 Thomas Street, Providence, RI
tel:401-331-1114. This show of artist members of the
Providence Art Club will be on exhibit from June 8th
through June 20th, 2008, with an opening reception on
Sunday, June 8th from 2-4PM in the Maxwell Mays Gallery.
In the adjacent Dodge House Gallery is an exhibition of "

well worth seeing. The "Word's" Members exhibition is
among the best I've seen at the art club, showing works in
all media. Mine is pictured at left. The exhibition is over
now, but I'm happy to say someone bought the drawing.
I'm always appreciative of that, and glad it has a good new
home.

Spring Bull Annual Members Show

This is the yearly exhibition of all the artist
members of the Spring Bull Gallery, located
at 55 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI Tel:

were a watercolor of the shoreline at night,
and a the sign at the top of the Biltmore Hotel

each from the member artists, as well as
many more examples of our work in the
gallery make this a good visit. The Newport
mansions are very nearby,  the Newport Art
Museum is almost across from the gallery,
and  the Tennis Hall of Fame is within
walking distance, all on historic Bellevue

Allen Johnson Drawing,  detail, charcoal on paper 21x28"
In Memory of Allen Johnson

The admirable artist, cartoonist, teacher and all
round raconteur, Allen Johnson, once remarked,
only half-facetiously, that whenever in doubt about a
painting, add purple.  This gives you a clue to the
quirky yet unfailingly valuable advice and art you
could expect from him.  For many years, while
working as a commercial art director and designer,
Allen also drew political cartoons for the Providence
Journal. With a background in fine art, including
graduation from the Rhode Island School of
Design, he was producing captivating watercolors
and oils as well, not to mention teaching figure/life
classes, and doing many special commissions
over the years, such as poster art for theatre
productions, and magazine and book illustrations.
The list of accomplishments could go on and on.
He married fellow artist, Joan Arnaud, whose own
often whimsical and varied work is a wonderful
complement to Allen's. The two of them have had a
real mentoring relationship to my wife Gail and me,
which we cherish.  Such friendship is of
inestimable value.  Allen and Joan both participated
in sponsorship of Gail and me for artist
membership in the Providence Art Club--itself a
remarkable institution offering a supportive
community for artists--where he and Joan
themselves actually met and were married.
Allen died this May of 2009 of a list of illnesses that
would have killed a lessor man a long time ago,
but he gave us who knew him eighty three
memorable years that will not be forgotten.  He
need never add purple where he's painting
now--juried into every show, winning every prize.
